What is Breathing Training?
Breathing is the only autonomic nervous system function we can consciously control. This means that through breathing, we can directly affect our heart rate, blood pressure, and stress levels.
Scientific Research
Vagal Tone and Parasympathetic System
Slow, deep breathing activates the vagus nerve, the main component of the parasympathetic nervous system. Research shows that strengthening vagal tone through breathing practices reduces inflammatory processes in the body (Tracey, 2007).
Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
Harvard Medical School studies (2018) demonstrated that regular breathing exercises increase heart rate variability – one of the most important indicators of health and stress resilience.
Cortisol Reduction
Ma et al. (2017) study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, revealed that an 8-week diaphragmatic breathing program reduced salivary cortisol levels by 50% in participants.
Physiological Mechanism
- Inhalation activates the sympathetic nervous system (heart beats faster)
- Exhalation activates the parasympathetic system (heart slows down)
- Longer exhalation than inhalation = greater relaxation effect
Recommended Breathing Rhythms
- 4-7-8 technique: Inhale 4 sec, hold 7 sec, exhale 8 sec
- Coherent breathing: 5-6 breaths per minute (optimal for HRV)
- Box breathing: 4-4-4-4 (used by US Special Forces)
